A Cathedral for Centuries
When Antoni Gaudí took over as chief architect of Barcelona's Sagrada Família in 1883, he knew he was accepting a task he would never finish. The basilica's design was so ambitious, so intricate — every column modeled after the branching of trees, every facade telling the story of Christ's life — that no single lifetime could complete it.
Gaudí poured forty-three years into the project. For the last twelve years of his life, he worked on nothing else, even sleeping in his workshop on site. When people questioned why he labored so intensely on something he would never see completed, he reportedly replied, "My client is not in a hurry."
He died in 1926 with less than a quarter of the basilica built. A century later, construction continues.
There is something profoundly freeing in Gaudí's understanding. He did not need to see the finished product to know his work mattered. His purpose was not to complete the cathedral. It was to be faithful to the vision he had been given.
We often confuse purpose with completion. We want to see the results, hold the finished thing in our hands. But Scripture reminds us that God works on a timeline far larger than our own. Paul wrote to the Philippians, "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
Your purpose is not to finish everything. Your purpose is to build faithfully with the years you are given, trusting that the Architect of it all sees the completed design.
