A Doctor from the Strawberry Fields

Maria Gonzalez was nineteen, sorting strawberries at a packing shed in Salinas, California, when the envelope arrived. A full-ride scholarship to UC Davis, pre-med. She read it three times standing in the gravel parking lot with dust on her boots, certain someone had made a mistake.

Her high school biology teacher had submitted the application without telling her. Nobody in her family had finished college. Her mother cleaned houses. Her father drove a tractor sixteen hours a day during harvest. The Gonzalez family didn't produce doctors. They produced calluses.

"How?" she asked her teacher on the phone that evening. "I don't even own a laptop."

He told her the scholarship covered everything. Books, housing, meals. All she had to do was say yes.
