A Father's Arms at the Finish Line
In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal. He had trained for years, endured multiple surgeries, and this was his moment. The gun fired, and Redmond surged forward with everything he had.
Then, halfway around the bend, his hamstring snapped. He crumpled to the track, clutching his leg, his Olympic dream collapsing in an instant. But Redmond did something no one expected. He stood up. He started hopping toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face.
And then came the moment that 65,000 spectators will never forget. A man pushed past security and ran onto the track. It was Jim Redmond, Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Step by agonizing step, father and son crossed that finish line while the entire stadium rose to its feet.
Derek didn't finish because he was strong enough. He finished because he trusted the one who came alongside him.
This is the portrait Scripture paints of our Heavenly Father. The prophet Isaiah writes, "Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength." We are not called to be strong enough on our own. We are called to trust the Father who runs onto the track when our legs give out, wraps His arm around us, and whispers, "We will finish this together."
