A Grain of Sand Held at Arm's Length

In 1995, astronomer Robert Williams made a decision his colleagues called reckless. As director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, he pointed the Hubble Space Telescope at a tiny, seemingly empty patch of sky — no bigger than a grain of sand held at arm's length — and left the shutter open for ten consecutive days.

What came back stunned the scientific world. That dark little speck contained over three thousand galaxies. Not stars — entire galaxies, each holding hundreds of billions of stars. Scientists now estimate the observable universe contains roughly two trillion galaxies.

Hold a grain of sand against the night sky tonight. Behind that tiny circle of darkness lie thousands of galaxies and distances so vast that light itself needs billions of years to cross them.

And the God who spoke all of that into being knows your name.

The psalmist felt this same holy vertigo: "When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is mankind that You are mindful of them?" (Psalm 8:3-4).

True humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is standing beneath a sky that stretches past all comprehension and marveling that the Creator of two trillion galaxies still bends low to hear your whispered prayer. The universe does not make you insignificant — it makes God's attention to you breathtaking.
