A Million Miles from Home, Exactly Where It Belonged

For twenty-five years, engineers at NASA built the James Webb Space Telescope for a single purpose: to capture the oldest light in the universe. Each of its eighteen gold-plated mirror segments was polished to a smoothness measured in millionths of an inch. Its five-layer sunshield unfurled to the size of a tennis court. Every component was designed not for versatility but for specificity — one telescope, one mission, one purpose.

On Christmas Day 2021, Webb launched. A month later it reached Lagrange Point 2, nearly a million miles from Earth. And there, in the cold silence of deep space, it did exactly what it was made to do — it captured light that had been traveling for over thirteen billion years, light no human eye had ever seen.

Here is what strikes me: Webb could not fulfill its purpose close to home. It had to journey a million miles into darkness, far from everything familiar, to become what it was designed to be.

Some of you feel that distance today — far from comfort, far from certainty. But the God who formed you in the womb may have you exactly where you need to be. "Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be" (Psalm 139:16). You were not mass-produced. You were handcrafted — every gift, every wound, every longing shaped for a calling only you can fulfill.

You are not lost. You are in position.
