A Modern Story of AI & Human Dignity
As we stand at the crossroads of faith and technology, I want you to picture a small, bustling town square on a sunny afternoon. Vendors line the streets, selling vibrant fruits, fresh bread, and handcrafted goods. Amidst the laughter and chatter, a young boy named Samuel is trying to sell his homemade lemonade. He’s excited, but his small stand is overshadowed by a shiny new kiosk nearby, operated by a sleek AI system that churns out perfect drinks at lightning speed. The townsfolk, mesmerized by the machine’s efficiency, flock to it, leaving Samuel feeling forgotten and devalued.
In this moment, we see a reflection of our own struggles with technology, particularly artificial intelligence, and the dignity of human life. Much like how Samuel feels the weight of competition with the machine, we too can feel threatened by the rapid advancements in AI that challenge our value as individuals. Yet, just as Proverbs 3:5-6 exhorts us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight,” we are reminded that our worth is not defined by our productivity or efficiency but by our relationship with God and our unique contributions to the world.
As Samuel watches the customers rush past him, he takes a deep breath and remembers his purpose. With newfound resolve, he starts to engage with each person, sharing stories behind his lemonade—how he helped his grandmother pick the lemons from her garden, how he learned to mix the perfect blend from her loving guidance. His smile and enthusiasm begin to draw people in, and soon, a crowd gathers not just for the lemonade, but for the warmth and connection he offers.
This is our calling in a world filled with technological advancement: to embody the hesed (lovingkindness) of God amidst the coldness of machines. We are to be the bearers of hope, reminding ourselves and others that human dignity flourishes not in competition with technology, but in the relationships we cultivate and the love we share. In this journey, let us lean on God’s wisdom, knowing that even in the face of challenges, He is crafting a beautiful path forward for us all.
