A New Blood Type

In the world of medicine, few procedures are as radical as a bone marrow transplant. When a patient with leukemia receives healthy stem cells from a donor, something remarkable happens over the following weeks. The donor's marrow takes root inside the recipient's bones and begins producing entirely new blood. The old, diseased cells are gradually replaced. And here is the astonishing part — if the donor had a different blood type, the recipient's blood type actually changes. A person who walked into the hospital as Type A can walk out as Type O. Their very blood has been made new.

Hematologists call this chimerism. The patient now carries the donor's DNA flowing through their veins. Under a microscope, the blood tells a different story than the one that person was born with.

The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here." This is not poetry dressed up as theology. Paul is describing something as concrete as a blood type change. When the Holy Spirit takes up residence in a human life, the transformation runs deeper than behavior modification or moral improvement. It reaches into the marrow of who we are.

You may have walked into this sanctuary carrying the old type — the old habits, the old identity, the old story. But the Great Physician is not interested in managing your symptoms. He is replacing your blood.
