A Star Above the Shadows

In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Return of the King, there is a moment that has moved readers for generations. Sam Gamgee lies exhausted in the land of Mordor — a wasteland choked with ash and shadow, where the air itself feels poisonous. He and Frodo are starving, barely able to walk, carrying a burden that grows heavier with every step. Everything visible says they will not survive.

Then Sam looks up. Through a gap in the dark clouds overhead, he catches sight of a single white star, glittering far above the smoke and ruin. And Tolkien writes that the beauty of it "smote his heart," and hope returned. Not because his circumstances had changed — they hadn't. The wasteland was still a wasteland. The road ahead was still impossible. But the star reminded Sam that above all the shadow, there was a light that no darkness could reach.

This is the shape of Christian hope. It does not pretend the wasteland is a garden. It does not deny the weight we carry. Instead, it lifts our eyes to something the darkness cannot touch — the faithfulness of the Almighty, shining beyond every shadow this world can throw.

The apostle Paul understood this when he wrote, "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." Hope is not the absence of suffering. It is the star that suffering cannot extinguish.

When the road ahead feels impossible, look up.
