Abraham Believed: Romans 4:1-12

What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, discovered in this matter?

Go back. Before Moses, before Sinai, before the law was given. Go back to a tent in Canaan, to an old man looking at stars.

If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God.

If Abraham earned his righteousness—if the father of the faithful achieved his standing through performance—then he had grounds for boasting. But not before God. Never before God.
