Age Without Obedience Cannot Claim Wisdom
The psalmist declares, "I understand more than the ancients" (Psalm 119:100), a statement that cuts against human nature. We assume that antiquity guarantees truth, that wrinkles necessarily accompany wisdom, that longevity proves insight. Yet Yahweh's Word shatters these comfortable assumptions.
Consider three reversals Spurgeon observed in Scripture:
First, antiquity offers no security for truth when contrasted with revelation. A lie spoken a thousand years remains a lie; a truth newly revealed by God outweighs the accumulated errors of centuries. The oldest doctrines crumble before God's Word.
Second, old age provides no proof of wisdom when contrasted with holy living. A man of ninety years may be a fool if he has lived seventy years in rebellion against Adonai. The young person who trembles before God's commandments possesses more genuine understanding than the gray-headed fool who despises correction.
