American History X: Transformed by Renewing the Mind (Romans 12:2)
In American History X, Derek Vinyard is a neo-Nazi whose hatred landed him in prison. There, a Black inmate named Lamont befriends him, slowly dissolving Derek's ideology through ordinary kindness—folding laundry, sharing jokes, treating him as human. Derek emerges transformed. "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind." Derek's mind was conformed to hate; Lamont's friendship renewed it. Transformation isn't just information; it's formation through relationship. The ideology of hatred couldn't survive daily proximity to the humanity of the other.
