Anabaptist Lens Perspective: Sermon Illustration
On a chilly autumn afternoon, I visited a local community garden, a vibrant space bustling with life and connection. As I walked among the plots, I noticed a group of young families gathered around a patch that had seen better days. The once-thriving vegetables had wilted, their leaves drooping in defeat. I overheard a mother sigh, “I thought we’d have a bountiful harvest this year. It feels like we’ve failed.”
But then an older man, a faithful gardener for decades, joined the conversation. With a twinkle in his eye, he shared a different perspective. “You know, sometimes our greatest growth doesn’t come from the plants we cultivate, but from the community we build around them. Each of us has a role to play, even in the face of disappointment.” He encouraged them to see not just the barren soil, but the opportunity to enrich it together.
This reminded me of Jeremiah 29:11, where God assures us, “For I know the plans I have for you... plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” In our journeys of faith, we often face the wilting seasons—times when purpose seems elusive. Yet, like that community garden, when we lean into one another, we find guidance and strength. Our shared struggles become the rich soil from which new life can emerge. Together, we cultivate hope, reminding one another that God’s plans for us are always blooming, even when we can’t see it yet.
