Anglican Lens Perspective: Sermon Illustration
Just a few months ago, I encountered a woman named Sarah at a community gathering. She had recently lost her job, a position she had dedicated years to, and she was feeling adrift, bereft of purpose. As we talked, her eyes glimmered with a hint of despair. “I don’t understand why this happened,” she confessed, "I thought I was following God's plan for my life."
I gently reminded her of Romans 8:28, which proclaims, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him." She listened intently, yet doubt lingered in her heart. So, I asked her to reflect on the tapestry of her life. "Have you ever tried weaving?" I inquired. She shook her head, intrigued. I explained how the back of a tapestry can appear chaotic, threads crossing back and forth with no apparent design. Yet, when viewed from the front, a beautiful picture emerges, each thread serving a purpose.
Sarah's eyes softened as she began to grasp this image. "Maybe my job loss is just a thread I can’t see yet," she mused. Encouraged by her insight, I shared stories of how others in our community had faced similar trials and found new pathways, new beginnings crafted from their pain.
In that moment, surrounded by others, we recognized that, as we lean together into faith, we can trust that God is weaving our stories for good, even when we cannot yet see the pattern. And together, we can help one another find purpose in the most unexpected places.
