Beyond the Diamond
On December 31, 1972, Roberto Clemente had every reason to celebrate. The Pittsburgh Pirates legend had just recorded his three thousandth hit that September — a milestone only ten other players had ever reached. He was thirty-eight years old, a World Series MVP, and already assured his place in baseball history.
But when a devastating earthquake struck Managua, Nicaragua, on December 23, Clemente couldn't rest. He organized relief flights, gathered supplies, and rallied his community. When he learned that previous shipments were being stolen before reaching survivors, he decided to board the next plane himself. On New Year's Eve, the overloaded cargo plane crashed into the Atlantic shortly after takeoff from San Juan. His body was never recovered.
Clemente once said, "Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don't, then you are wasting your time on earth." He understood something many of us struggle to grasp — that purpose is never about what we accumulate for ourselves. It is about what we pour out for others.
The Apostle Paul wrote, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10). The Almighty doesn't measure our lives by our stat lines. He measures them by whether we stepped into the purpose He designed for us — even when that purpose costs us everything.
Clemente's final flight carried rice, beans, and medicine. But it also carried a testimony: some callings are worth your very life.
