Beyond the Pull

In physics, there is a concept called escape velocity — the precise speed an object must reach to break free from a planet's gravitational pull. For Earth, that number is 11.2 kilometers per second, roughly 25,000 miles per hour. Below that threshold, no matter how high you climb, gravity will always drag you back down. You might soar for a while, but the pull never lets go. You arc, you slow, you fall.

But at escape velocity, something remarkable happens. The grip loosens. The tether snaps. You move beyond the reach of what once held you, and you keep going — not because gravity disappeared, but because you finally had enough force to overcome it.

I think of the people I have sat with over the years who tried everything to break free from addiction, shame, bitterness, cycles of destruction they inherited from their parents. They would climb for a while — white-knuckle their way upward — only to feel that old pull drag them back to the same low place.

But then they encountered the power of the living God. And what they could never generate on their own, the Holy Spirit supplied. Not a little boost, but escape velocity for the soul.

Paul understood this when he wrote, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free" (Galatians 5:1). The Almighty does not just give us a running start. He provides the power to break the pull entirely — so we never have to fall back into the same orbit again.
