Bones That Learn From Pressure
In 1892, German surgeon Julius Wolff published a discovery that still shapes modern medicine. He found that human bone is not static. It actively remodels itself in response to the stress placed upon it. Place repeated pressure on a bone, and the body sends specialized cells called osteoblasts to reinforce that exact point. The bone grows denser, harder, stronger, precisely where the load is heaviest.
The reverse is equally true. NASA discovered that astronauts who spend months in the weightlessness of space lose up to two percent of their bone density per month. Without resistance, the body sees no reason to build strength. Remove the stress, and the structure quietly weakens from within.
There is a sermon hidden in our skeletal system. We pray for God to remove the pressure, and sometimes He does. But often, the Almighty does something more profound. He uses the pressure itself to make us stronger than we were before.
Paul understood this when he wrote, "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4).
Courage is not the absence of pressure. Courage is trusting that the God who designed bones to grow stronger under load is doing the same work in your spirit. The very thing pressing against you today may be the thing El Shaddai is using to make you unbreakable.
