Born to Shine in Darkness

In 2017, marine biologists Séverine Martini and Steven Haddock published a remarkable study from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. After analyzing thousands of deep-sea organisms, they found that roughly seventy-six percent of creatures living in the ocean's midnight zone — more than a thousand meters below the surface, in absolute darkness — produce their own light.

Think about that. In the deepest, darkest waters on earth, three out of every four creatures were designed to glow.

And here is what struck me: none of them produce the same light for the same reason. The anglerfish dangles its lantern to lure prey. The Hawaiian bobtail squid hosts luminous bacteria to erase its own shadow from predators below. The firefly squid flashes brilliant blue to attract a mate. Same darkness. Same depth. Entirely different purposes for the light each one carries.

You may feel like you are living in a dark season — a season where the pressure is immense and no one can see what you are going through. But the God who fills the midnight ocean with living light did not place you in darkness without equipping you for it. El Roi, the God Who Sees, designed you to carry a specific light that no one else was made to carry.

Your glow is not an accident. Your purpose is not interchangeable. The darkness around you is not evidence that God forgot you — it is the very place He designed your light to shine.
