Breaking Free from the Stone

In the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, just down the hallway from the famous David, stand four unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo known as the Prisoners or Slaves. They are among the most haunting works of art in the world. Each figure appears to be mid-struggle, twisting and straining as if trying to wrench itself free from the rough marble that still encases it. A shoulder emerges here, a knee presses forward there, but the stone has not fully released them.

Michelangelo believed the finished form already existed inside every block of marble. The sculptor's task was not to impose a shape but to liberate what was already there — to chip away everything that was not the true figure.

This is what the Almighty does with us. Sin encases us like that unfinished stone. It presses against our limbs, holds us in postures we were never meant to hold. We strain and twist, trying to free ourselves by our own effort, and we remain stuck. But God, the master artisan, sees the person already living inside the stone. With patient hands — sometimes through joy, sometimes through suffering — He chips away what does not belong until the true self emerges.

Paul wrote, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." Not freedom we manufacture, but freedom sculpted by the One who knew our shape before the marble was ever quarried.
