Breaking Free in the Rain

In The Shawshank Redemption, there is a moment that has become one of cinema's most iconic images of freedom. Andy Dufresne has spent nearly twenty years inside the walls of Shawshank State Penitentiary, wrongfully convicted, enduring cruelty and injustice that would crush most souls. But Andy has been quietly, patiently working toward something no one else can see. He has been crawling through a tunnel he carved with a tiny rock hammer, night after night, year after year.

When he finally breaks through the prison sewer pipe and emerges on the other side, he stumbles into a creek bed in the middle of a thunderstorm. He tears off his shirt, lifts his arms to the sky, and lets the rain wash over him. He is free. Not because the system released him. Not because someone opened the gate. He is free because he never stopped believing that the walls around him did not define him.

That is what the Apostle Paul meant when he wrote, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." The freedom Christ offers is not a transfer to more comfortable confinement. It is a complete breaking through — out of guilt, out of shame, out of every identity the world has stamped on us.

Whatever prison you are sitting in today, the God who makes all things new has already carved the way out.
