Breaking Free of the Painted Lines

In 2021, Simone Biles stood on the world's biggest stage at the Tokyo Olympics and did something no one expected. She withdrew. The greatest gymnast in history stepped back from competition, not because her body failed her, but because she recognized that the relentless pressure to perform had become a prison. The world questioned her. Critics called it weakness. But Biles understood something profound — she was no longer competing out of joy. She was competing out of obligation, fear, and the crushing weight of everyone else's expectations.

What happened next was remarkable. After stepping away, after breathing, after finding herself again, she returned. And in the balance beam final, she won bronze with a simplified routine that carried more freedom in it than any of her record-breaking performances. Her smile on that podium told the whole story.

Paul writes in Galatians 5:1, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." So many of us live in cages we have decorated so beautifully we have forgotten they are cages. We perform for approval. We strive for acceptance we already have in Christ. We exhaust ourselves earning what the Father freely gives.

True freedom is not the absence of limits. It is the presence of the right motivation — running, jumping, living not to prove our worth, but because the Almighty has already declared it.
