Breaking Through the Scar Tissue
In orthopedic medicine, there is a condition called adhesive capsulitis, commonly known as frozen shoulder. After an injury or surgery, the capsule of tissue surrounding the shoulder joint thickens and tightens. Bands of scar tissue called adhesions form, slowly imprisoning the joint until the person can barely lift their arm. The cruel irony is that the body's own healing response, scar tissue meant to protect the wound, becomes the very thing that steals their freedom of movement.
When physical therapy alone cannot break through, surgeons perform a procedure called manipulation under anesthesia. While the patient sleeps, the doctor carefully but firmly moves the frozen joint through its full range of motion, tearing apart the adhesions that have held it captive. The patient wakes up and, for the first time in months, can raise their arm again.
How many of us are living with a frozen soul? Old wounds, betrayal, grief, shame, formed scar tissue around our hearts. What began as protection became a prison. We stopped reaching out. We stopped lifting our hands in worship. We stopped embracing others.
But Christ is the Great Physician who breaks through our adhesions. "So if the Son sets you free," Jesus promised, "you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). He does not leave us frozen in our pain. He moves us, gently and firmly, back into the full range of motion we were created for.
