Built for Ninety Days

In January 2004, NASA landed the Opportunity rover on Mars with a simple mission: explore the surface for ninety days, then power down. Engineers expected the harsh Martian dust storms and freezing nights to destroy its solar panels within weeks of that deadline.

Opportunity had other plans. Ninety days came and went. Then a year. Then five. Then ten. The little rover kept rolling across the Martian landscape, discovering evidence of ancient water, photographing craters no human eye had ever seen, and traveling over twenty-eight miles on a planet millions of miles from home. When dust covered its solar panels, unexpected Martian winds would sweep them clean — what NASA scientists affectionately called "cleaning events."

Opportunity lasted nearly fifteen years before a planet-wide dust storm finally ended its mission in June 2018.

There is something in that story that echoes the Apostle Paul's words: "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair" (2 Corinthians 4:8). God did not design you for a ninety-day faith. He built you for the long journey. And when the dust of life's trials threatens to block your light, His grace arrives like an unexpected wind, clearing what you could never clear on your own. You were made to keep going — not in your own power, but because the One who launched you into this life has not yet declared your mission complete.
