Carried When You Cannot Walk
In The Return of the King, the final film of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, there is a moment that wrecks me every time. Frodo Baggins has collapsed on the slopes of Mount Doom. The Ring has grown unbearably heavy. His body is spent, his spirit nearly broken. He cannot take another step. And Samwise Gamgee, his faithful companion — exhausted, starving, far from the green hills of the Shire — looks at his friend and says, "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you." Then Sam hoists Frodo onto his back and climbs.
That scene is not just great cinema. It is a portrait of how God sustains His people through suffering. There are seasons when the weight of grief, illness, or doubt pins us to the ground. We cannot muster one more step of faith. And in those moments, the Almighty does not stand at a distance shouting encouragement. He draws near. He carries us.
Isaiah 46:4 promises, "Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you." The Lord does not ask us to white-knuckle our way through every trial. Sometimes perseverance looks less like heroic endurance and more like letting yourself be carried by the One whose strength never fails.
When your legs give out, beloved, His arms do not.
