Christ as Mediator of the Superior Covenant of Grace
The gospel dispensation under which we live is properly a COVENANT—an agreement sealed by Adonai Himself. Jesus Christ stands as the Mediator of this covenant, fulfilling the office that requires one who bridges the gap between God and man. His qualification for this high office rests upon the hypostatical (personal union) of the Divine and human natures—He alone could stand in both realms simultaneously.
Christ's mediation demands from us five particular regards. First, He deserves our superlative and most ardent love. Second, exalted honour, adoration, and praise are due to Him who was so wonderfully qualified for this office. Third, as Mediator of the new covenant, we must readily trust Him with all our spiritual and everlasting interests. Fourth, we humbly seek from Him the grace that makes us meet for His salvation—His awakening grace to reveal our guilt and need, His quickening grace to strengthen us toward eternal life. Fifth, every act of religious worship must be performed in His name, for He is our way to the Father.
The gospel covenant surpasses the legal covenant of the Jews through superior terms, better helps, and more glorious promises. Repentance, faith, and sincere obedience are the requisites upon which the covenant's blessings rest. The revelation we enjoy under Christ is more plain, full, and extensive than the shadowy types and ceremonies of old.
