Christ Fulfilling the Eternal Moral Law of God
Our Lord Jesus declared His purpose in Matthew 5:17 with unmistakable clarity: to fulfil the law and the prophets, not to destroy them. This distinction cuts to the heart of His redemptive mission.
The moral law of Elohim is eternal and immutable because it flows from the Divine nature itself. If any person claims the moral law has been altered, consistency demands they suppose the Divine nature has also changed—an impossibility. The ceremonial law was imperfect and temporary; the moral law is perfect, bearing the impress of the Divine image, and therefore cannot be annulled.
Christ fulfilled this law in three decisive ways. First, He spiritualized it, revealing its inward depths—that righteousness extends beyond external obedience to the condition of the heart. Second, He embodied its principles through active obedience from childhood and passive obedience in His sufferings. Third, He universalized it by abolishing class, national, and sex distinctions in morality, making righteousness accessible to all humanity.
His mission honoured the law's breach: He atoned for humanity's violation of it and vindicated its eternal glory. Through His presentation as the sufficient motive and His impartation of Divine power, Christ secured the law's fulfilment in His people. The stars do not disappear when the sun rises; they shine still. So the moral principles of God's law remain luminous in the light of Christ's redemption.
