Christ Jesus as a Bundle of Myrrh: Incomparable Precious
"A bundle of myrrh is my well-beloved unto me" (Song of Solomon 1:13). Christ Jesus is unutterably precious to believers. Nothing gives the believer such joy as fellowship with Christ. Earthly joys are mere husks compared with Jesus, the heavenly manna. One mouthful of Christ's love and a sip of His fellowship surpass a whole world of carnal delights. What is chaff to wheat? What is sparkling paste to a true diamond? What is a dream to glorious reality?
Christ is precious to the believer because nothing is good without Him. This world becomes a howling wilderness without our Lord. When He hides His face even momentarily, the flowers of our garden wither, pleasant fruits decay, and birds suspend their songs. Yet when all earthly comforts fail, believers find sufficiency in their Lord. In poverty, Christ draws near and enriches. In rejection and despair, His fellowship is sweetest. "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God" (Isaiah 41:10). As afflictions abound, so do consolations abound by Christ Jesus. The Christian would sooner abandon anything than forsake his Master. Samuel Rutherford captured this profoundly: if the coals of Divine wrath fell upon his head and consumed him utterly, yet knowing those coals fell on Christ and he bore them in communion with Him, he would choose it for his heaven.
