Christ the Nail Fastened in a Sure Place

Isaiah 22:23 presents Christ through the metaphor of a nail driven firmly into a secure foundation. This image reveals two dimensions of His fastening hold upon humanity.

First, Christ's grip upon the general mind of the world surpasses all other spiritual leaders. Buddha, Zoroaster, Confucius, and Mohammed command millions, yet their systems appeal only to select faculties of human nature. Christ, by contrast, grasps the entire person—intellect, imagination, conscience, hope, fear, and love. History confirms this supremacy: followers of other faiths convert daily to Christianity, while the reverse never occurs. Christendom expands universally; heathendom contracts. His "nail" is driven so deep that extracting it would tear civilization itself to pieces.

Second, Christ's hold upon His consecrated disciples penetrates far deeper still. He captures the entire soul, becoming to the human spirit what sap is to a living tree. Annihilation of the soul itself would be required to remove this "nail."

The nail teaches that small things possess immense significance. When David prepared iron in abundance for temple nails (1 Chronicles 22:3), he understood that tiny fasteners secure great structures. Ezra prayed for "a nail in His holy place"—not for prominence, but for security (Ezra 9:8). An ancient proverb captures this truth: "For want of a nail the shoe was lost, for want of a shoe the horse was lost." Our firm placement in Christ determines our eternal stability.
