Christians as Light: The World's Moral Darkness Dispelled
Ye are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). Jesus Christ proclaimed these words knowing the world's deepest moral condition. The world, despite its attainments in science and literature, remains dark regarding salvation—what must I do to be saved? Beneath surface beauty lurks revolting immorality. The light of Christianity alone solves mankind's most anxious inquiries.
The Church diffuses this light by reflection and dispersal. Light possesses a peculiar character that mere science or secular knowledge cannot possess. Since Christianity's dawn, even bright substitutes—philosophy, learning—have become handmaids to this holy illumination. Science and religion need not be divided.
Christians bear this light as a distinction of persons (ye), principle (light), and efficacy (light of the world). Believers possess Christ in their own souls and exhibit Him through life and labor. The symbol of light embodies purity, knowledge, action, unity, and benevolence. This light discloses God, the way to heaven, and the pathway to redemption.
Yet this truth demands application through privilege and obligation. Kindled from the Sun of Righteousness, believers are commissioned to go forth and cast their light upon all the world. Our mission is to enlighten the sphere in which we are placed, answering the deepest problems that agitate the human heart with the Gospel's transformative power.
