Christ's Sovereignty: King Upon Zion's Holy Hill
"Yet have I set My King upon My holy hill of Zion" (Psalm 2:6). Christ is King in Zion—the sole Sovereign of His Church by the Father's appointment and ordination. His sovereignty appears through Scripture prophecy, types, titles, and the testimony of enemies and strangers alike. The badges of sovereignty are ascribed to Him everywhere.
Consider the happiness of true and loyal subjects of Christ, yet mark the dangerous risk run by those who invade His government and contemn His authority. These are they who turn authority derived from Him to the hurt of His kingdom. They model His visible kingdom after their own fancy. They walk willingly after the commandments of men in opposition to Christ's commands. Equally guilty are those who witness injuries done to the King of Zion by others yet remain silent.
Christ's kingdom is twofold: essential (His Divine nature) and personal or mediatory (as Immanuel, God-man). His mediatory kingdom extends over heaven, earth, and hell. The Church—called His "body" and "flock"—is either militant on earth or triumphant in heaven, both dwelling upon the holy hill of Zion.
This kingdom possesses nine properties: it is spiritual, of large extent, not populous, a kingdom of light, heavenly, regular and well-governed, hated by devil and world, stable and everlasting, and holy. By His royal authority, Zion's King overrules and governs all creatures and their actions, even the darkest dispensations, for His glory and His Father's purpose.
