Christ's Sovereignty Over the World to Come
Hebrews 1:6 presents a startling reversal: the Son, who became "a little lower than the angels" through His suffering (Hebrews 2:9), now receives subjection of "the world to come" (oikoumene mellousē—the inhabited world of the gospel age). This is not merely future eschatology but the present reality of Christ's kingdom inaugurated at Pentecost.
In former times, Elohim employed angels extensively to order His Church, granting them considerable authority. Yet in these last times, God has made His Son—not the angelic ministers—the administrator-general of His kingdom and universal Lord. The angels themselves now serve under His dominion.
This sovereignty demands four responses from believers. First, hold strong faith in the universal triumphs of His system; He possesses both plentitude of power and abundance of time for accomplishing His promises. Second, recognize that our future well-being depends entirely upon present obedience. The righteous gain assurance; the wicked lose false hope. Third, cultivate reconciliation to present events and calm expectation of future ones. Fourth, and most urgently, cultivate Christ's friendship now. Without it, His control runs contrary to our soul's deepest aspirations and will exercise itself through punishment. The greatest human interest is securing His favor in the present age, ensuring that His sovereign authority in the age to come operates as blessing rather than judgment.
