Contemplating A Better Political Imagination
Lord of all nations and neighborhoods, You who measured out manna in the wilderness so that no family went hungry and no tent overflowed with waste — reshape our political imagination by the standard of Your generous equity.
We confess that we have settled for smaller visions. We have mistaken our party platforms for Your kingdom platform, our tribal loyalties for covenant faithfulness. Yet Paul's words to the Corinthians cut through every era's partisan fog: "The goal is equality." Not the flattening sameness of human utopias, but the stunning reciprocity You designed — where the family with twelve loaves breaks bread with the family scraping by, and both discover they have exactly enough.
In Your providence, the Israelites learned this in the desert. Those who hoarded manna found it crawling with worms by morning. Those who trusted Your daily provision slept in peace. Teach us that same dangerous trust in our civic life — the courage to advocate for the vulnerable not because it polls well, but because the God of Abraham hears the cry of the oppressed and will not be silent.
Give us, as Calvin urged, eyes to see every human face as bearing Your image — the refugee and the tax collector, the single mother navigating a broken system and the legislator who has the power to mend it. Make us restless with any political arrangement that leaves Your image-bearers grinding in poverty while others stockpile what they cannot use.
