Contemplating Family
As we gather today, let us turn our hearts toward the profound gift of family, which is both a blessing and a challenge. In the book of James, we are reminded that true religion is reflected not just in our personal piety but in how we care for those around us: “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world” (James 1:27, NIV).
Picture, if you will, a family sitting around a table in a cozy home, the air filled with the aroma of a hearty meal. Laughter dances like sunlight through the window, but behind that laughter can often lie unspoken struggles—fractured relationships, unmet needs, and burdens too heavy to carry alone. This is where God calls us to engage deeply.
Think about your own family dynamics. Who among your loved ones is navigating pain or loneliness? Perhaps it’s a sibling wrestling with anxiety, a parent coping with illness, or a child feeling lost in a world that often seems overwhelming. In each of these situations, we have the opportunity to be vessels of God’s hesed, His steadfast love.
Imagine being the person who brings hope into those dark corners, who listens with empathy, and who offers forgiveness when it is difficult to do so. When we step into these roles, we embody the character of Christ, extending grace as He did.
