Count Backward from Ten
Every day, roughly sixty thousand patients across the United States lie down on an operating table and do something remarkable. A person they may have met only thirty minutes earlier — their anesthesiologist — asks them to breathe deeply, and within seconds, they surrender the one thing no human being can willingly give up: consciousness itself. Their lungs will be managed by a ventilator. Their blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels will rest entirely in another person's hands.
What strikes me is that no patient has ever been able to watch their own surgery. You cannot oversee the procedure. You cannot give mid-operation feedback. The moment propofol enters your IV line and you start counting backward from ten, you will almost certainly never reach seven. You are, in the fullest sense of the word, helpless — and you chose it.
This is closer to biblical trust than most of us realize. The Psalmist wrote, "Into your hands I commit my spirit" — not "into my own capable hands" (Psalm 31:5). Trust in the Almighty has never meant understanding every detail of what He is doing. It means believing that the One whose hands hold your life is skilled, is faithful, and is paying closer attention to your vital signs than you ever could.
Some of you are white-knuckling your way through a season that God is asking you to simply sleep through. What if surrender is not the absence of courage — but the fullest expression of it?
