Counting Backward Into God's Hands

Every day, roughly sixty thousand patients across the United States lie down on an operating table and do something remarkable. They allow an anesthesiologist to chemically shut down their consciousness. They count backward from ten, and somewhere around seven, they surrender every bodily function — breathing, heart rate, blood pressure — into the hands of someone they met only minutes before.

Dr. Emery Brown, a Harvard neuroscientist and anesthesiologist, has described general anesthesia as a "reversible coma." The brain enters a state deeper than sleep. The patient cannot wake themselves. They cannot protect themselves. They are, for all practical purposes, completely helpless. And yet, millions of people consent to this every year because they trust that the one holding their life has the skill and the intention to bring them safely through to the other side.

This is what the Psalmist understood when he wrote, "Into Your hands I commit my spirit" (Psalm 31:5). Trust is not a feeling of certainty. It is the willingness to close your eyes when you cannot control the outcome. It is releasing your grip on consciousness itself because you believe the One who holds you is faithful.

Some of you are facing a season where God is asking you to count backward — to let go of your need to manage every detail, to stop white-knuckling your way through life. The Almighty does not ask you to understand the procedure. He asks you to trust the Surgeon. And He has never lost a patient He intended to keep.
