Counting Backward Into the Arms of God

Every day, roughly 60,000 patients across the United States lie down on an operating table and do something remarkable. At the anesthesiologist's instruction, they begin counting backward from ten. Most never reach seven. In that deliberate descent from wakefulness into unconsciousness, they surrender everything — their breath, their heartbeat, their very ability to feel pain — into the hands of someone they met perhaps thirty minutes earlier.

Dr. Emery Brown, a professor of anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School, has described general anesthesia as a reversible drug-induced coma. The patient's brain enters a state more profound than sleep. They cannot protect themselves, cannot speak, cannot wake by willpower alone. And yet millions submit to it willingly, because they trust the team standing over them to bring them back.

This is the anatomy of trust. Not a feeling of confidence, but a decision to let go when every instinct says hold on.

The psalmist understood this. "Into Your hands I commit my spirit," David wrote in Psalm 31:5. Not into my understanding. Not into my control. Into Your hands — the hands of the Great Physician who knows every cell, every synapse, every hidden wound.

Faith asks us to do what the surgical patient does: stop counting, stop clutching, and rest in the competence of the One who holds our next breath. The God who knit you together in the womb does not need you awake to keep you alive.
