Courage That Charges Into the Dark

In The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Aragorn leads a ragged army to the Black Gate of Mordor. The math is impossible. They are outnumbered, outmatched, and they know it. This is not a battle they can win. The only purpose of their march is to draw the Enemy's gaze away from two small hobbits carrying a burden up a volcanic mountain.

Aragorn stands before the gate as it swings open, revealing a sea of enemies beyond counting. His soldiers tremble. For a long moment, he faces the overwhelming darkness ahead. Then he turns back to look at his friends — Merry, Pippin, Legolas, Gimli — and whispers two words: "For Frodo." He raises his sword and charges.

That is the shape of biblical courage. It has never meant the absence of fear. It has never required favorable odds. Courage, as Scripture reveals it, means advancing toward what the Almighty has asked of you even when the outcome is not yours to guarantee.

Joshua heard it at the edge of the Promised Land. Esther felt it walking uninvited into the king's throne room. David knew it in a valley with a giant and five smooth stones.

The Lord does not ask you to charge because you will certainly win. He asks you to charge because He is worth charging for. The victory has always been His to secure. The faithfulness has always been yours to offer.
