Crawling Out of the Sewer and Into the Light

In The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne spends nineteen years inside the walls of a prison he never deserved. But the moment that stays with you — the one the camera lingers on — is when Andy crawls through five hundred yards of raw sewage pipe and emerges on the other side into a thunderstorm. He tears off his shirt, lifts his arms to the sky, and lets the rain wash him clean. He went in a prisoner. He came out free.

That image haunts me every time I read Paul's words: "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here." Transformation in Christ is not a polite renovation. It is not new curtains on the same old windows. It is crawling through the darkest, most humiliating tunnel of your life — through every failure, every shame, every addiction you thought would define you forever — and discovering that on the other side, there is rain and open sky and a life you never dared to imagine.

Andy didn't pretend the sewage wasn't real. He crawled through every inch of it. And that is exactly what God does with our past. He does not erase it. He redeems it. He uses the tunnel itself as the passage to freedom.

Whatever pipe you are crawling through this morning, keep moving. The storm on the other side is not punishment. It is the Almighty washing you clean.
