Crawling Through the Storm

In The Shawshank Redemption, there is a scene that has stayed with millions of viewers for over three decades. Andy Dufresne, wrongfully imprisoned for nearly twenty years, finally escapes through a tunnel he has carved with a tiny rock hammer — night after night, year after year, hiding his work behind a poster on his cell wall. But the tunnel doesn't lead to freedom. It leads to a sewage pipe. Andy has to crawl five hundred yards through raw filth in total darkness before he emerges on the other side, standing in the rain with his arms stretched wide, finally free.

That image haunts me every time I read Paul's words: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" (Galatians 6:9). Paul knew something about sewage pipes. He was shipwrecked, beaten, imprisoned, and left for dead. He never promised the road to faithfulness would be clean or comfortable. He only promised it would lead somewhere.

Most of us are not waiting for one dramatic moment of deliverance. We are in the tunnel. We are crawling through the hard middle — the marriage that requires daily forgiveness, the addiction recovery that demands one more honest day, the grief that has no shortcut.

But the God who sees you in the dark is the same God who waits for you in the rain. Keep crawling. The wall behind you is already broken.
