Daily Dismantling Tyrannical Leadership
Dear God of self-emptying love,
Martin Luther once wrote that a Christian is simultaneously the freest lord of all and the most dutiful servant of all. In Philippians 2:5-8, Paul shows us what that paradox looks like in flesh and blood: Christ Jesus, who held the very nature of God, did not clutch at power like a tyrant grips his throne. Instead, He opened His hands and let it all go — the glory, the privilege, the cosmic authority — and picked up a basin and a towel.
Every tyrant in history has demanded that others kneel. Jesus knelt first. Every oppressor has said, "Serve me." Jesus said, "I came to serve." This is the revolution that dismantles every form of tyrannical leadership — not with matching force, but with a love so stubborn it would rather die than dominate.
Lord, show me where I have confused leadership with control — in my home, my workplace, my congregation. Forgive me for the moments I have wielded authority like a weapon instead of offering it as a gift. Teach me the Lutheran truth that true power flows downward, like water finding the lowest place, like Christ descending from heaven to a manger to a cross.
