Designed for Ninety Days, Faithful for Fifteen Years
When NASA's Opportunity rover touched down on Mars in January 2004, engineers expected it to last ninety days. The battery would drain, dust would smother its solar panels, and the brutal Martian winters would freeze its circuits dead. Ninety days — that was the plan.
Opportunity lasted nearly fifteen years.
Through dust storms that blotted out the sun, through temperatures plunging to negative one hundred degrees, through wheel failures and memory glitches, that six-wheeled rover kept rolling. When dust choked its panels, Martian winds would sweep them clean — what engineers came to call "cleaning events" — and Opportunity would surge back to life and press on. Its final data transmission in June 2018 told a simple story: the battery was fading, and the sky was going dark.
The apostle Paul knew something about pressing on when the power runs low. "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair" (2 Corinthians 4:8). Paul's body was breaking down. The road was brutal. But like that rover, he kept moving — not because he was indestructible, but because something beyond his own power kept him going.
You were not designed for a ninety-day faith. The God who launched you into this life has built you for the long journey. And when the storms come and the light grows dim, He is the wind that clears the dust from your soul and says, "Keep going. I am not finished with you yet."
