Devotional: Social Media and Community
Dear God of Fire and Fellowship,
The early church didn't have Wi-Fi, but they had something better — they had the raw, unfiltered presence of Your Spirit binding them heart to heart. Acts 2:44-45 tells us they shared everything in common, selling their possessions to meet each other's needs. That wasn't a policy. That was a people so set ablaze by Pentecost that generosity became as natural as breathing.
Now here we are, Lord, carrying that same Spirit in our pockets — connected to billions through glowing screens. We scroll past a brother's cry for help sandwiched between advertisements and memes. We "like" a sister's prayer request and keep moving. Forgive us, Father, for settling for digital distance when You designed us for the kind of community that notices an empty chair, that shows up with groceries before anyone asks, that prays with hands laid on real shoulders.
But I believe You are doing a new thing. I've seen it — a young mother posting at two in the morning that she can't stop crying, and within the hour, three women from her small group are at her door with coffee and Kleenex and the gift of simply sitting close. That is Acts 2 with a group chat. That is Your koinonia — Your deep, Spirit-breathed fellowship — breaking through the algorithm.
