Diligence as the Counterforce to Rashness and Laziness
Proverbs 20:5 declares that the thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness. Diligence stands opposed not merely to laziness, but equally to rashness—that premature and inconsiderate haste which ruins many endeavors. The diligent man first plans (Greek: bouleuo, to deliberate) and then acts. He proceeds thoughtfully and systematically through each phase of his work.
Diligence accomplishes little without careful forethought. It means steady perseverance in execution. The projects of the attentive, plodding, persevering man—who begins in earnest and continues in earnest, prepared for difficulties—are those that promise, and generally do produce, a favorable result. Such a man recognizes that the workshop stands as one of the finest fields for human development.
Contrast this with the evil of dishonesty (verses 6–7). A lying tongue may gather treasures momentarily, but these are vanity—empty vapor. Dishonesty breaches the law of Elohim, invades His Divine right of property, and destroys mutual confidence among men. The remedy lies in a renewed nature through the Spirit of truth, a sensitive conscience that recoils from petty pilfering, and a consciousness of the Divine presence and oversight. An act of theft often destroys self-respect, peace of mind, bodily health, and the soul itself. True provision comes through diligent, honest labor under Yahweh's watchful eye.
