Divine Recompense: The Righteous Rewarded in This Earth
Proverbs 11:31 presents two interpretive traditions worthy of the preacher's attention. First, Elohim has appointed that a portion of happiness accrues to the righteous in this present world, while the misery wages of sin fall yet more abundantly upon the wicked. Second, even the righteous face timoria (punishment) for their sins upon earth; how much more severely shall the wicked be judged?
The first interpretation proves most natural. This world operates not as a place of final retribution but as a proving ground where virtue may suffer and wickedness may flourish—yet only provisionally. A man might reason, "Let us seize what good lies within our reach, whatever the cost to others." Solomon pronounced such self-seeking foolish even by worldly prudence alone, setting aside eternal consequence.
Yet the balance tilts steadily toward righteousness. The upright and regular members of society possess both sophia (wisdom) and strength to outlast the schemer. Honesty remains the best policy in observable fact. The temperate and self-governed accumulate real reward in this life, advancing even in worldly success where the wicked cannot.
Ecclesiastes presents exceptions to this rule; Proverbs declares the rule itself. The punishment of sin tarries not—evil and suffering interrupt the wicked's course swiftly and predictably. We may forecast their end with confidence. The recompense of Adonai operates with visible certainty in the present age.
