Do Not Turn Off Your Computer

If you have ever installed a major Windows update, you know that screen. The progress bar crawls forward — 27%, 42% — then seems to freeze at 87% for what feels like an eternity. And there, in plain text, is the instruction that tests every fiber of your being: "Do not turn off your computer."

Everything in you wants to intervene. Restart. Try something different. Force a solution. But Microsoft's engineers know something you don't in that moment — the update is doing its deepest work precisely when it appears to have stalled. The operating system is rewriting core files, rebuilding configurations, laying foundations that will make everything run better once the process is complete.

The writer of Hebrews understood this kind of waiting: "Let us run with patience the race that is set before us" (Hebrews 12:1). The Greek word for patience there, hypomonē, doesn't mean passive waiting. It means enduring under pressure while something essential is being completed.

God's work in our lives often looks like that frozen progress bar. A prayer unanswered for months. A relationship that seems stuck. A calling that hasn't materialized. We want to force a restart, to take matters into our own hands. But the Almighty is doing His deepest work in precisely those seasons when nothing seems to be happening.

Don't turn off the process. The update is installing. And when it's finished, you'll run better than you ever have before.
