Don't Ever Give Up

On March 4, 1993, basketball coach Jim Valvano walked to the stage at the first ESPY Awards. Ten years earlier, he had led North Carolina State to one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history, cutting down the nets after a last-second shot toppled heavily favored Houston. Now cancer was cutting him down. He was so weak that friends helped him to the podium.

What Valvano said that night has echoed through thirty years: "Don't give up. Don't ever give up."

He wasn't pretending the diagnosis wasn't real. He wasn't performing optimism. He was testifying. Even as his body failed, he insisted that every day held something worth living for — laughter, thought, and tears of joy. He died less than two months later, but his words launched the V Foundation, which has raised hundreds of millions for cancer research. Hope outlived the man who spoke it.

The apostle Paul knew the same paradox. "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair" (2 Corinthians 4:8). Biblical hope was never the absence of suffering. It was the stubborn, sacred refusal to let suffering have the final word — because the final word belongs to the Living God.

Whatever is pressing in on you today, hear this: the One who holds your future is faithful. Don't give up. Don't ever give up.
