Eighteen Mirrors, One Vision

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope carries eighteen hexagonal mirror segments, and no two are shaped alike. Engineers at Ball Aerospace spent years grinding each one to a unique prescription, polished to an accuracy of billionths of a meter. Every segment was crafted for a specific position in the array because the telescope's ability to capture light from galaxies thirteen billion light-years away depends on each mirror doing precisely what it was designed to do.

If even one segment were missing or misaligned, the image would blur. The whole vision suffers when one piece fails to take its place.

Paul writes that "we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10). The Greek word for handiwork — poiema — gives us our word "poem." You are not mass-produced. You are a handcrafted original, precision-shaped by the Almighty for a role only you can fill.

Perhaps you feel like one small mirror in an impossibly vast universe. But the God who flung those galaxies into space also ground the unique contours of your calling with the same exacting care. Without your piece in position, something in His grand vision goes unseen.
