Eleazar's Office: Four Spiritual Necessities for the Pilgrim Priest
Leviticus 4:16 reveals the office of Eleazar the priest, whose duties illuminate the spiritual responsibilities of every believer. Eleazar carried four sacred charges: oil for light, sweet incense, the daily meat-offering, and anointing oil. These are not mere ceremonial burdens—they represent the four necessities for Christian pilgrimage through this earthly wilderness.
The first charge was oil for light. God has made us the lights of the world, yet our luminescence often dims. We hide our witness beneath the bushel of business or the bed of sloth, forgetting that Adonai bids us shine forth to His glory. Like the Levites who carried the tabernacle throughout Israel's desert wandering so that the children of Israel might constantly commune with their God, we are called to carry Christ wherever we go. Our motto must echo the ancient priesthood: "To me to live is Christ."
Eleazar's responsibility teaches that whether the Almighty entrusts us with holy vessels or heavier burdens—even vexatious duties—all service carries equal spiritual weight. The High Priest ensures no soul questions the importance of their assignment. The oil representing illumination, the incense symbolizing intercession, the meat-offering suggesting sustenance, and the anointing oil denoting consecration—these four sustain the pilgrim priest's journey. Without them, communion with Elohim ceases. By embracing these spiritual necessities, we fulfill our calling to minister faithfully in the wilderness.
