Emerging from the Stone

In the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, just down the hall from the famous David, stand four unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo known as the Prisoners. These figures appear to be mid-struggle, their bodies partially emerging from rough, uncarved marble. A torso strains forward. An arm pulls free. A face tilts upward as if gasping for air. The rest remains trapped in stone.

Michelangelo believed that every block of marble already contained a figure within it. The sculptor's task was not to create something from nothing but to chip away everything that was not the true form — to set free what was already there.

This is how God works in our lives. Freedom is not something added to us from the outside. It is what remains when the Lord chisels away the fear, the shame, the false identities, and the heavy weight of trying to be someone we were never meant to be. Paul writes, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2 Corinthians 3:17). The Holy Spirit does not make us into strangers to ourselves. He reveals who we have been all along — beloved children of the Most High, made in His image.

If you feel like one of Michelangelo's Prisoners today — half-trapped, still struggling — take heart. The Master Sculptor is not finished. And every strike of the chisel is bringing the real you closer to the light.
