Evening Prayer: Technology and Human Connection
Heavenly Father, I come to You this evening with a phone in my hand and a quiet ache in my chest. Deuteronomy 10:19 calls me to love the stranger — and tonight I confess that I have scrolled past more strangers today than the ancient Israelites encountered in a lifetime. I have seen their faces, read their words, and kept moving.
Forgive me, Lord, for the times I have confused connection with communion. For the group chats that replaced the kitchen table. For the thumbs-up emoji I sent instead of driving across town to sit with someone who was falling apart. You did not design us for efficiency — You designed us for hesed, that stubborn, covenant love that shows up uninvited with casserole in hand.
And yet, God, I thank You that technology is not beyond Your redemption. I think of the grandmother in our congregation who video-calls her missionary grandchildren every Sunday evening, pressing her palm flat against the screen as if she could touch their faces through the glass. That, too, is holy.
Teach me discernment, Lord. Show me when to answer the notification and when to silence it — when to type a message and when to lace up my shoes and walk next door. Help me use every tool at my disposal not to build a wall of convenience around my life, but to widen the circle of my table.
