Evening Prayer: Women and Church Leadership
Gracious God, who filled Phoebe's hands with the letter that would reshape an empire, and who called Junia an apostle before the ink on Paul's parchment had dried — hear this evening prayer.
In Luke 12:33, Jesus tells us to sell our possessions and give to the poor, to store up treasure that no thief can steal and no moth destroy. Lord, the Church has too often hoarded power like old coin in a locked chest, guarding leadership as though it were a scarce resource rather than a gift You pour out without measure. Forgive us for the treasure we have buried — the sermons never preached, the pastoral wisdom never offered, the prophetic voices kept silent — because we confused human tradition with divine instruction.
Tonight, in the quiet of this Anglican evening office, I ask You to make me generous where the Church has been stingy. Help me recognize the gifts You have already placed in the women around me — the deacon whose hospital visits leave patients weeping with gratitude, the lay reader whose voice carries Scripture like a bell across still water, the church warden who holds a fractured vestry together with patience that looks remarkably like the Holy Spirit at work.
You who entrusted the first Easter proclamation to Mary Magdalene, grant us courage to entrust Your Gospel to every faithful voice You raise up. Make us a community worthy of the treasure You have given — not by clutching it, but by spending it freely.
